Can you even be considered a blogger when you post as infrequently as I do? Anyway, here it is....my festival entry and my first offering for Quilts of Valor!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhynSpyAx0KfP9YCUyUxSca7KhBwWw7KxueLmBRdp9ik_3L2sJU2YJFlEWqCKyiLQ80V-44xnyPf_LmFRqwWPU1sACIxXqAmtQiMtgoFzgrOVI6pZDsjQ6n7WkqWI8QIJHYF1VWmBSWHts/s1600/DSC_0292.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-size: large;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhynSpyAx0KfP9YCUyUxSca7KhBwWw7KxueLmBRdp9ik_3L2sJU2YJFlEWqCKyiLQ80V-44xnyPf_LmFRqwWPU1sACIxXqAmtQiMtgoFzgrOVI6pZDsjQ6n7WkqWI8QIJHYF1VWmBSWHts/s1600/DSC_0292.JPG" height="267" width="400" /></span></a></div>
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">It's called Stars & Strips, a pattern by Bev Getschel that appeared in the May/June issue of McCalls Quilting. The pattern is really easy, but it was a lot of fun and I was able to make it entirely from stash. You can just make out the quilting which is rows of really, really big feathers. It was a quick project and I was glad to be able to support Quilts of Valor. Forgot to take a picture of the pillowcase I made for the presentation, but it was pretty cute. </span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: large;">I don't recall the size of this quilt and I'm too lazy to go find my magazine, but it met the QOV size requirement, so I'm putting it in the large quilt category. Hope to get a chance to spend some quality time over at <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2014/10/24/bloggers-quilt-festival-large-quilts-2/">Amy's Creative Side</a> this weekend and check out all the festival quilts. Hope you do too!</span><br />

Pieced letters. How cute! These are for a baby quilt featuring the baby's name. There are a few more letters to go. Some vowels would help. At first I figured the name would have to be appliqued and really dreaded that whole procedure. Then I stumbled over the <a href="http://temeculaquiltco.blogspot.com/2014/08/little-letters-getting-ready-for-school.html">Temecula Quilt Company blog</a> and their quilt along aptly titled <a href="http://temeculaquiltco.blogspot.com/2014/08/little-letters-getting-ready-for-school.html">Little Letters</a>. Perfect! I'm not doing the quilt along, although the quilt is great, but the letters are just what I needed for my little quilt. They're quick and easy. No applique needed. Yippee!</div>

At last, a day with sunlight so I can get a picture of Celtic Solstice. Here's the front.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEzGHi3NnzazetvwUgKXLzNbBJ5g39qb5SlX7-yMAC0lHUHl0EDIp7dgF4yYQoc1erfdAuFofrgNCPsS5O9Mt4egvv2wNvHId_31TM7HreqnyJZEi1qpMloo26BqPeQa4oYweOsOmn36k/s1600/DSC_0275.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEzGHi3NnzazetvwUgKXLzNbBJ5g39qb5SlX7-yMAC0lHUHl0EDIp7dgF4yYQoc1erfdAuFofrgNCPsS5O9Mt4egvv2wNvHId_31TM7HreqnyJZEi1qpMloo26BqPeQa4oYweOsOmn36k/s1600/DSC_0275.JPG" height="267" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I think the triangle in a square border is great, even though I had to do quite a bit of creative piecing to get it to fit! I'm getting more confident using the Easy Angle and Companion Angle rulers and look forward to making more blocks with them. <br />
<br />
The backing is pieced from leftover fabrics and extra blocks. At this point I was just wanting to get rid of some fabrics!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
The on-point blocks bordered in yellow were pieced with the cut off half square triangles from making the chevron units. <br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
I basted this quilt with a home-made basting spray I read about on someone's blog and it worked perfectly! For quilting, I used a pale green Aurifil thread in a free-hand swirly design. My free-motion quilting always comes out too dense, making for a thread heavy quilt that's hard to maneuver in the machine. It also makes my swirls less than perfect. This quilt washed up fine and doesn't seem overly heavy to use though. Oh! Now I see I also quilted a hair into the swirls. Oops! Unfortunately, it's already boxed up and shipped to it's new owner. I don't think he'll notice. <br />
<br />
I failed to get a close-up of the binding but it's made from old shirts in various small blue checks. It was supposed to be the binding on a blue and white quilt I made a couple of years ago but I couldn't find it when I needed it. I thought it was just fine for this project and I was happy not to have to piece a binding. I was ready to get this quilt over!<br />

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Drawing and painting are so hard! I want things to look like they do in my head without having to work at it. My nephew and his wife adopted two brothers and then promptly got pregnant with yet another boy. I have yet to acknowledge even the first two children so I've been in the baby quilt business. I ordered two fabric panels of Ten Little Things by Jenn Ski and then shamelessly stole the assembly idea from <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://jlgwyn.wordpress.com/tag/10-little-things-quilt/">Seams Crazy</a></span> (who has lots of other lovely quilts as well) who adapted it from the <span style="color: blue;"><a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/06/jungle-path-baby-quilt.html">Moda Bakeshop</a> </span>pattern, <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/06/jungle-path-baby-quilt.html"><i>Jungle Path</i></a> by Jessica Kelly at <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2012/06/jungle-path-baby-quilt.html">SewCraftyJess</a>. I wasn't familiar with Jessica's blog till I started putting in these links and I see she must be very, very busy now with a sweet little newborn! Congratulations Jessica! If you don't already read her blog, do check it out for a picture of the baby and the wonderful nursery Jessica put together for her. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Anyway, here's one of the two panel quilts I made. Just one picture. The other is virtually identical.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNfKeeyzn_1qvcNdHS1yC87ewxRhiJbGcN3V0k0If3rqRq2BkjnXKiBbeDaxRLBFDQh5gz0qEiXNLa0JnsrF_Qvb62rFa1LLq4t4VeY0Lqa06iHkYYVYLZGArluipazkKYuSmcH73Dmlk/s1600/DSC_0280.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNfKeeyzn_1qvcNdHS1yC87ewxRhiJbGcN3V0k0If3rqRq2BkjnXKiBbeDaxRLBFDQh5gz0qEiXNLa0JnsrF_Qvb62rFa1LLq4t4VeY0Lqa06iHkYYVYLZGArluipazkKYuSmcH73Dmlk/s1600/DSC_0280.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm still in the midst of quilting the quilt for the newborn and hope to finish it in the next few days. I've gone way overboard on the quilting part and it's taking longer than it should.<br />
<br />
Now I'm going to go link up with Sarah at <span style="color: #20124d;"><a href="http://confessionsofafabricaddict.blogspot.com/2013/11/can-i-get-whoop-whoop-one-christmas.html">Confessions of a Fabric Addict</a> </span>and look at all the other quilts and things. Happy Friday!Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11952343122795316299noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318900051849843562.post-23192507803215797622013-08-31T17:34:00.000-04:002013-08-31T17:34:54.277-04:00Star Surround Flimsie Finish<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">I kill myself. Somehow, I was under the impression that Friday (yesterday) was the last day to get this finished. I sewed like a mad woman, forsaking all household duties and responsibilities. Finished the last stitch, ran outside and flung it over the deck railing for the photo shoot just as big fat rain drops started falling. Snap....got it! Made the deadline. Back inside to the computer to post and take a last peep at the instructions. Oh. Never mind. Here it is anyway.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTMCBISd0nOm4sGOgZL_mptsUYwSPKyqGpBB_6jtLTCNxPjjlhJc89-vifnmrFAtc1Y9vZXeZmKjFWz4KnwpW2LEaPx0KpXQCdAZK2dnFC2m8kD0m_fv2iZeuDZqBd3WEES2USSrUY32o/s1600/DSC_0271.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjTMCBISd0nOm4sGOgZL_mptsUYwSPKyqGpBB_6jtLTCNxPjjlhJc89-vifnmrFAtc1Y9vZXeZmKjFWz4KnwpW2LEaPx0KpXQCdAZK2dnFC2m8kD0m_fv2iZeuDZqBd3WEES2USSrUY32o/s640/DSC_0271.JPG" width="640" /></a></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Courier New",Courier,monospace;">The colors are pretty washed out in this picture, kind of a good thing considering how retina searingly bright it is in real life. Lots of the fabrics read as solids too, though there are no solids in the quilt. I like the block and enjoyed learning Melissa's technique for making flying geese. Don't think I really care for blocks this large though. Mine is 16 twenty four inch blocks and it's huge! Now to find nine yards of backing fabric that I can buy and still keep food in the house.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

I decided late to join in on this quiltalong and had to rush selecting and cutting fabrics before heading out to spend a couple of weeks with my mama. Here are my blocks laid out on her front porch. <br />
<br />

<br />
Mama thinks my blocks are really pretty, especially the two pink and yellow ones on the top left. She likes pastels. I like that I'm using stuff thats been in my stash forever. I think the blocks are prettier than the picture looks. I enjoyed learning the method for making the no waste flying geese but have to admit I'm a little worried about how they'll fit with the star centers as they were definitely not perfect. We'll see how it goes. I'm home now with lots of clean up to do after leaving hubby unattended for two weeks!<br />
<br />
Forgot to mention that I've linked up with Melissa at <a href="http://happyquiltingmelissa.blogspot.com/2013/08/star-surround-quilt-long-surrounds.html">Happy Quilting</a>...of course, since it's her quiltalong! Another Friday, another little finish! I'm really happy to have this one done. The fabric is a Sandy Gervais line that came out right about when I started quilting and I thought it was wonderful. So I bought three charm packs, put them on a shelf and looked at them for four years. For some reason I felt like I had to make a quilt with nothing but those three charm packs. Guess I didn't get the concept of adding other fabrics. Slow learner. So this is it. From a pattern by <a href="http://moosequilts.blogspot.com/">Moose on the Porch.</a> </div>

Yes, that's a bare mattress. The sheets are back on now.<br />

My main, or most active wip is still the behemoth log cabinish quilt that I'm hand quilting.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I'm enjoying the quilting even though the size and weight make it hard to maneuver on my lap. A floor frame would help, but I don't want to sit at attention while I quilt. This is my down time, slouchy, relaxing in front of the tv with hubby project. The thread color I chose, a subtly variegated yellow to peachy orange, was only available locally in a DMC #5 floss and that's a little harder to needle than a #8, I think. </span><br />

First a baby quilt finished in the spring. Don't remember the fabric or quilt pattern name. It was a fun, quick quilt. Waiting for a home.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmJB_rT7J-uf2qFhNEED0pe_DIBcmr8V79XKRyR84IiZD1JI7zQQol1dOaNLZ1G6GAG94BVrPGl4ic7b2qdAQ3qHOVYs9pTr_9WNRa7XHAl2OFqShWcWHCLtqWskF-sAzQIF_-02SljcE/s1600/DSC_0272.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmJB_rT7J-uf2qFhNEED0pe_DIBcmr8V79XKRyR84IiZD1JI7zQQol1dOaNLZ1G6GAG94BVrPGl4ic7b2qdAQ3qHOVYs9pTr_9WNRa7XHAl2OFqShWcWHCLtqWskF-sAzQIF_-02SljcE/s640/DSC_0272.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Here's the back. This quilt was pieced while visiting my mama in a land faraway where there are no quilt shops. So I got the backing and the batting at, dare I say it? Wally World! The batting is bamboo which I liked a lot. No complaints with the quality of either batting or backing. Like with anything, you just have to shop carefully, I guess. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt1uPjD_3Z2DxuHkZZD6zAzJAIkPTMac78ws5Yy4JiGzhJD1QwJHC1jcNaV8T9vQp6rblnpBogG3hutyfbcjmcmuDZE4PUH6Uy5WGNpIGJutCI4hA6YAw_MinAMKxblJIp5NSadumqTBo/s1600/DSC_0273.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt1uPjD_3Z2DxuHkZZD6zAzJAIkPTMac78ws5Yy4JiGzhJD1QwJHC1jcNaV8T9vQp6rblnpBogG3hutyfbcjmcmuDZE4PUH6Uy5WGNpIGJutCI4hA6YAw_MinAMKxblJIp5NSadumqTBo/s640/DSC_0273.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I quilted around all the little birds and flowers in the border print which was a pain in the patootie, but seemed to need doing.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">And last, I finished the quilting on the foot warmer quilt I posted about last week.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">This is a big quilt (84 x 102) that requires 9 1/2 yards of fabric for the backing. I already had 8 1/2 yards of a hideously bright yellow </span><span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">that never worked with anything and it finally occurred to me to turn it over and use the back side. Perfect! A little searching turned up this bird panel</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">that I bordered and pieced in to make up the difference. The yellows worked so well together and it looks really cute. Isn't it fun when things work out that way? You'll have to take my word on the cuteness since it's pinned to the floor right now and covered with batting. I'm taking a break to post this before going back and starting the dreaded pin basting.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace; font-size: large;">My ambitious plan is to hand quilt this.</span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">A guy quilt, possibly for one of my stepsons who seems to appreciate handmade. The pattern is <i>Night Storm</i> by Jean Ann Wright taken directly from the Marcus website using the exact same fabrics by Laura Berringer. Obviously, there isn't an original bone in my body. Here is the back.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPHa9MI2EWDWuM0YL0D0kjlTsrYYDo2uvOuoMrImImqSaVDwispr3avAypxcVLWn6lgBnxkBK04kREzwZ2I9K2rMDqVlWG7KN5BV8nCG_ZsBHbfkRgBH3yE-MhhKJHy75BPjcDG_cB7rQ/s1600/DSC_0273.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPHa9MI2EWDWuM0YL0D0kjlTsrYYDo2uvOuoMrImImqSaVDwispr3avAypxcVLWn6lgBnxkBK04kREzwZ2I9K2rMDqVlWG7KN5BV8nCG_ZsBHbfkRgBH3yE-MhhKJHy75BPjcDG_cB7rQ/s640/DSC_0273.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Why didn't I place that strip off center or at least more off center than it is by accident? </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I had a dreadful time quiting this on my new machine, complete with thread breakage, eyelashing and tension problems galore. I finally finished it on my old Kenmore with the six inch throat. No eyelashes, no thread breakage no little thread dots on the back. Go figure.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">That being said, there are two good takeaways from this quilt experience. I basted it with Elmer's Washable School Glue. No pins or fumes and the layers held together great despite all the manhandling involved in getting the thing quilted. For more info on glue basting check out the <a href="http://www.quiltingboard.com/"><span style="background-color: white; color: blue;">Quilting Board</span></a>. If you aren't familiar with this site do give it a look. It's a wealth of information and quilting encouragement.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Next the binding.</span></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9dk5amsets9BidHNFuRl0CLWSwqz1kk57RE_jr39u9emavgrgrZWRytBSLeDAqmpq-7NaRPLTViqSabKqeCxQw-g343jMq8C7RrzqjIaOzZ4pnOEhqxv3nhY8b6doM4tCpFc8qZgZM6E/s1600/DSC_0279.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9dk5amsets9BidHNFuRl0CLWSwqz1kk57RE_jr39u9emavgrgrZWRytBSLeDAqmpq-7NaRPLTViqSabKqeCxQw-g343jMq8C7RrzqjIaOzZ4pnOEhqxv3nhY8b6doM4tCpFc8qZgZM6E/s640/DSC_0279.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">See how nice and sharp my corners are? Okay, I guess binding should be the same width front and back, but one thing at a time. I used <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2hWQ5-ZccE"><span style="background-color: white; color: blue;">Sharon Schamber's glue basting</span> </a>method and it was so easy; fiddly and time consuming, but neat and precise with no pins or clips to get in the way. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">I'm going to link to <a href="http://confessionsofafabricaddict.blogspot.com/2013/07/can-i-get-whoop-whoop-little-christmas.html"><span style="color: blue;">Confessions of a Fabric Addict</span></a> and <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: blue;">Finish it up Friday</span></a> and go finish burying the billions and billions of threads caused by all my stopping, starting and thread breaking. </span></div>

Have to say I'm loving it. This is the small project I've started on, a chevron quilt made from a tutorial at <a href="http://beesquarefabrics.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-make-zig-zag-quilt-without.html">Bee Square Blog</a> that uses rectangles instead of half square triangles.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY7QxZeHFieWoN09B6m9OeZfvsCjqsXLF8smV32jvLn5SIt1o1LGpwmUmnSlIEg2zmQxPUI9CMM3cN2Mei0AyQiuG0DzOhMhTCT5OrqBnMYykKiP4mZHYt9VxMcTMUDfuyv1HSDnSWhhk/s1600/DSC_0282.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhY7QxZeHFieWoN09B6m9OeZfvsCjqsXLF8smV32jvLn5SIt1o1LGpwmUmnSlIEg2zmQxPUI9CMM3cN2Mei0AyQiuG0DzOhMhTCT5OrqBnMYykKiP4mZHYt9VxMcTMUDfuyv1HSDnSWhhk/s1600/DSC_0282.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">It's a small lap sized quilt that I plan to give to my mama.</span> <span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Something to cover her little feet when she's lying down watching tv. </span><span style="font-family: 'Courier New', Courier, monospace;">I used some really old stash fabric, which made me happy. For the atual quilting I'm</span><span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"> using a variegated embroidery floss which doesn't specifically state that it's colorfast, but the colors are close so I don't think it will make a difference.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Here is the full quilt, again in dark house rotten photo mode.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEf-FdBV0QVHLcMIZtXtrNGjRNmQFNIVt8kxkk-7zvBD45Aq1bEac4D26bT6pAFScwZV3CArwQAco5F7u5Jd91N8eH_9CofylIRpRfc7omW3gn2f-FepZBXDEPZvHWcu3pIhpLIRZ7WA4/s1600/DSC_0281.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEf-FdBV0QVHLcMIZtXtrNGjRNmQFNIVt8kxkk-7zvBD45Aq1bEac4D26bT6pAFScwZV3CArwQAco5F7u5Jd91N8eH_9CofylIRpRfc7omW3gn2f-FepZBXDEPZvHWcu3pIhpLIRZ7WA4/s1600/DSC_0281.JPG" height="428" width="640" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">For some reason I thought it necessary to add setting triangles which was a good exercise in doing a little quilt math for me, but which caused odd, floating, unattached rectangles at the top and bottom. It's okay. My mama loves me and she won't care.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Courier New, Courier, monospace;">Linking with <a href="http://www.freshlypieced.com/2013/07/wip-wednesday-wips-from-way-back.html">WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced</a> and going to make myself sick with envy over all the gorgeous things other quilters are making.</span>Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11952343122795316299noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1318900051849843562.post-2183331200801927492013-07-15T10:25:00.002-04:002013-07-15T10:25:47.063-04:00Design Wall Monday...Cheating<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

These little flower shapes were cut for fusible applique. Of course, I goobered that up so they didn't adhere properly. I didn't think to machine stitch them down till after the piecing was done and this quilt is too big to be maneuvering around like that. The fusible stuff on the back makes a booger to sew through, too. On the bright side, it's pretty & cheerful and there are twenty blocks which makes for plenty of mindless tv stitching and quality time with my hubby.<br />
<br />
I'm also so glad I selected a picture where my seams don't line up!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Hot from the dryer, a baby quilt made trying to use every last smidgen of fabric left over from the last quilt I posted about. I think. Too lazy to check back and be sure. The little pinwheels and hst's are from the clipped off corners of snowball type blocks and I built churn dash blocks around them. Piecing this was a little difficult for me because the hst's I started with weren't a uniform or commonly used size and I actually had to make some calculations. With numbers and measurements and everything. Very basic, simple math, yet a challenge for me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Here's kind of a close-up of the quilting. I really over did it, but I was under the influence of Angela Walters' Craftsy class where she was drawing swirls and pebbles. Swirls I enjoyed, pebbling, on this small of a scale, not much. There is a whole lot of thread in this quilt which makes it not particularly soft and cuddly for a baby. And all that pebbling made the unpebbled blocks a little poofier than I'd intended. </div>

<br />
What fun working with spring colors! I'll start sewing the blocks together today, I hope. Then there's applique in the border, a first for me, but something I've been wanting to try.<br />
<br />
I'll also spend time checking out sewing machines. I've just about decided what I want and now it's down to price, dealer and location. If I take the plunge and buy an expensive new machine, I hope it improves my work as much as I think it might. Right now I'm sewing on an older machine with no needle down, thread cutter, knee lift, or decorative stitches of any kind and only six and half inches of throat space. Throat space and needle down are tops on my list. Any sewing machine advice is very welcome!<br />
<br />
Decision making is hard and I've been known to just keep putting off purchases because of it. Like right now, I need a new rug and bedskirt for the bedroom, a new vacuum cleaner, possibly a new couch, and two chairs that need to be reupholstered or slip covered. And I've put all these things off till I really need it all done at once, which gets overwhelming and too expensive to contemplate. Oh, and I've had a prescription for new glasses since October but can't get around to picking out frames so I'm still wearing the old ones with a scratched lens that I stepped on two years ago!<br />
<br />
Well, don't procrastinate about going over to <a href="http://www.patchworktimes.com/2012/02/13/design-wall-monday-february-13-2012/">Patchwork Times</a> and checking out all the other <a href="http://www.patchworktimes.com/2012/02/13/design-wall-monday-february-13-2012/">Design Wall Monday</a> posts. There's some really gorgeous work this week!<br />

Our move was one of the most difficult we've ever had. Long story. No point in rehashing. Anyway, we're in now and I've actually done a bit of sewing so here goes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGy_so96FYAm69Yp-DVzqhkgnhAbOWCTgSVkk5cFp5ywypCYIBkeVZ7KyqgII-UBg3y6WXAtRvSrN3F_0UPwzqHyycdZ7eNAavX1yhSrq8TNGmLaVv2mBDG273JtBD56XYxt0PEPgA02k/s1600/DSC_0223.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="478" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiGy_so96FYAm69Yp-DVzqhkgnhAbOWCTgSVkk5cFp5ywypCYIBkeVZ7KyqgII-UBg3y6WXAtRvSrN3F_0UPwzqHyycdZ7eNAavX1yhSrq8TNGmLaVv2mBDG273JtBD56XYxt0PEPgA02k/s640/DSC_0223.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
Today's quilt is the result of an experiment with the much maligned Wally World fabric. Last summer I picked up some charm packs and a fat quarter bundle, all on sale. The colors were so bright and cheerful and the prices so incredibly cheap that I couldn't resist. <br />
<br />
I decided to try a disappearing nine patch and got started. I was less than happy with the charm squares. They weren't necessarily on grain or necessarily square. A few of them felt a bit like window screen. I persevered, but I was pretty bummed and really didn't give it my best effort figuring it was doomed to failure anyway. I was also determined to use just my Wally World fabric, thus the haphazard looking borders. Leftover charms and the fat quarters made up the pieced backing, which I failed to photograph, and I bound it with strips from my scrap bin.<br />
<br />
For quilting, I did loops and daisies. Since the quilt is a riot of colors, I used the many different colored bobbins left over from previous projects which freed up a lot of bobbins and made me feel thrifty. Used several colors for the top thread as well.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9jjZjbNpP6TqYncCsaUZT6Y73_LMUS07OeBwQGEarirmUPqVtv0GWvXlagy1phfcME1qDTHtc2veKIZxEaOgjnUWhGiM5WWZMknfVP-kRrW2QhLNx0p3q1oV5QAuN3c26mGvCJt5_La0/s1600/DSC_0230.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9jjZjbNpP6TqYncCsaUZT6Y73_LMUS07OeBwQGEarirmUPqVtv0GWvXlagy1phfcME1qDTHtc2veKIZxEaOgjnUWhGiM5WWZMknfVP-kRrW2QhLNx0p3q1oV5QAuN3c26mGvCJt5_La0/s640/DSC_0230.jpg" width="428" /></a></div><br />
<br />
In the end, I liked it better than expected. While the charm squares weren't the highest quality, the fat quarters were just fine and every bit as nice as quilt shop fabrics. I wouldn't hesitate to use them again.<br />
<br />
The final test was the wash. I expected some fading, but there was none. The quilt is just as obnoxiously bright as before. <br />
<br />
So, what do I think about Wally World fabric? I think it's like any other. You can find good fabric or not so good fabric. You just have to shop carefully, which hopefully, we all do anyway.<br />

Yippee! We love Tennessee. We have friends and family there. There's no state income tax. It's beautiful. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So anyway, I spent last week in Chattanooga looking for a place to live. Rental houses are sky-high and in short supply so when I found something that would mostly work, I jumped on it. The neighborhood is nice and large so there's plenty of space for my husband to run and me to walk. The house itself is smaller than we're used to so I won't have a dedicated sewing space. I'll have to squeeze my machine and fabric and supplies in one of the guest bedrooms. But that's okay. I'll finally live close enough to some of the people I love to have visitors!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We don't move till December 1, so I'm back in South Carolina for a few days, supposedly getting ready for the movers, but really, trying to get a hand project together to fill my homeless, sewing machine-less time. I had most of the blocks pieced for Spaghetti Junction and thought I'd take that with me to sew the blocks together by hand. Now I've discovered to my anguish and chagrin, that I messed up the seam allowance on a good many blocks. Much measuring, ripping and resewing is being done.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On one last sad note, my sweet and terrible little Jack Russell passed away two weeks ago. I posted about her <a href="http://thingsthatarenotperfect.blogspot.com/2011/08/pets-on-quilts.html">here</a> back in August for SewCalGal's <i>Pets on Quilts</i> show. She was so old and tired and just worn out. I miss her something fierce. It's like she's all over the house but she's just not here. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<div align="center"><img alt="Amy'sCreativeSide" src="http://amyscreativeside.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Fullscreen-capture-9222011-123854-PM-e1316717452510.jpg" style="border: medium none;" /><span id="goog_345416438"></span><span id="goog_345416439"></span><a href="http://www.blogger.com/"></a></div><br />

This quilt was the topic of my very first blog post back in May. Seems like forever ago!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><img border="0" height="596" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3xcqsJe7yw5yptOLMiEeW0O-sPVeAQK0BAcGRH486P6kPAyiHv8gIRdBf7jkIG83eBvwnwv-lVh5v7nz6kJi6f5c1wcpymiMpWxkgYg6P_UTrtYyNvo5EmKIi9MJpRJQwa34Zv3AxDT0/s640/DSC_0234.JPG" width="640" /> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Chain Link is a pattern from the book, <i><span style="font-size: small;">Link to the '30's</span> </i> by Kay Connors and Karen Earlywine. I loved working with the bright colors and learning the partial seam technique, even making the prairie points, although ironing them all was a bit tedious. Most of all, I enjoyed free-motion quilting all those feathers. They aren't the greatest, but all washed and crinkled they look just fine and I've spent more than a few afternoon naps under this puppy! This was my second quilt with thirties repro fabrics so I think I've got them out of my system now, just not out of my stash!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Hope you enjoy this and all the lovely entries in the <a href="http://amyscreativeside.com/2011/10/28/bloggers-quilt-festival-fall-2011/">Blogger's Quilt Festival</a>! Thanks, Amy!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I've completed just a few blocks so far of the Spaghetti Junction quilt. I may wind up regretting my fabric choices but have to admit I love the magenta and red combination. Crossing my fingers that the thin red strips will bring it all together. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihpxQTcfLw91ISqECj4xut0ZBugejeOB3nmoS22j4ObDqX6r-o-A1IWm_TJEdh-0EZyxw6FztEsLUkOendWTXVPT15T7HgRSU-BGtcAgSCSC-gs83iDl7r-JNnbPPEZ8kUsm5Cn8GuVQ/s1600/DSC_0215.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhihpxQTcfLw91ISqECj4xut0ZBugejeOB3nmoS22j4ObDqX6r-o-A1IWm_TJEdh-0EZyxw6FztEsLUkOendWTXVPT15T7HgRSU-BGtcAgSCSC-gs83iDl7r-JNnbPPEZ8kUsm5Cn8GuVQ/s320/DSC_0215.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
The pattern is made up of two alternating blocks and the other ones look like this.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>Next, is a little progress on my hexagon star quilt that I've named the Hexabomination quilt. Two of the diamonds are sewn together and I'm working on the third. This would be over quickly if I did it on the machine but it's reserved for mindless TV sewing.<br />

Yes, the hexagon project has grown to such proportions that it requires a design lawn. It's also the only place I could get enough light. I'm aware this has become something of an abomination, but I just couldn't stop sewing those little boogers together. Planning, must remember planning! I guess the next step is to add a solid fabric between the star points. I have no idea how to measure for that or how to go about it or what color to use. Any ideas, insights, suggestions would be appreciated. Please be gentle.<br />
<br />
Next up are the practice blocks for Heather Mulder Peterson's "Spaghetti Junction"<i> </i>from her book, <a href="http://ankastreasures.wordpress.com/books-and-patterns/">Living Large 2</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjuG7CBvXx3Rt1p2ZeCb144GE4dDDH-cHo-KnayxSSuu-be2psHHivHwv2CBmIHga8q6qEZEKzwa01Hiq1OE52WqVM6lu5C646khlF_x7vLRse00f2xIdI4lZHQZjDY5WwKOl7ZvIFnAU/s1600/DSC_0182.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjuG7CBvXx3Rt1p2ZeCb144GE4dDDH-cHo-KnayxSSuu-be2psHHivHwv2CBmIHga8q6qEZEKzwa01Hiq1OE52WqVM6lu5C646khlF_x7vLRse00f2xIdI4lZHQZjDY5WwKOl7ZvIFnAU/s640/DSC_0182.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Click <a href="http://ankastreasures.wordpress.com/books-and-patterns/">here</a> to see how the finished quilt is supposed to look. The patterns in the book are for large scale prints and it seems that I've accumulated quite a few that I'll be combining with a fat quarter bundle of Sandi Henderson's <i>Secret Garden</i> fabric in the <i>Sunset Garden</i> colorway. I hope it works. I'm using the rust colored chicken wire print where the pattern uses brown dot fabric. I plan to add a narrow inner border of that fabric as well. The block on the right finished out pretty much perfectly at ten inches. The one on the left is off in places almost a quarter inch. Back to the machine with that one. Accuracy is the absolute bane of my existence!<br />
<br />
Check out what others are working on at <a href="http://www.patchworktimes.com/2011/10/03/design-wall-monday-october-3-2011/">Patchwork Times</a>. Have a great week with lots of quilting!Janehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11952343122795316299noreply@blogger.com11
